Sometimes you come across a gem in the least suspecting places. Such was the case when we entered the Shurniak Art gallery museum in Assiniboia, Sk. A world class art museum in southern Saskatchewan. The town of Assiniboia is a farm, ranch, southern prairie kind of town. Not far down the road a man by the name of William (Bill) Shurniak was raised, he became a successful financial advisor, well traveled and a patron of the arts.
It is said that a painting or a sculpture is not complete until it is viewed by another. Mr. Shurniak has most generously made his extensive collection of Canadian & International art available to all of us to be appreciated and enjoyed for generations to come.
The Shurniak Art Gallery is large, with a number of gallery rooms, where the permanent collection is exhibited in rotation. As well new upcoming artists are regularly shown in the gallery.
It was truly a joy to move through the various galleries, and view some of the artwork from the permanent collection. To be able to see work from world known Canadian artists (especially for me, to see work by Doris McCarthy) and not have to leave our province, is a gift. As well the paintings and sculptures from International Artists were stunning, the portraits by an Asian artist were deeply moving.
The generosity and vision of one person can give vitality to a town, inspire children and adults, encourage artisans and demonstrates an understanding of the value that art plays and gives to the world. Mr. Shurniak and all who keep the Trust thriving, we were honoured and grateful to be able to enjoy the amazing collection, in your beautiful and outstanding gallery. May many from Saskatchewan and the globe continue to make your gallery a destination spot, it is a fine cut emerald on the Canadian prairies.
Make sure to have lunch at ‘Fresh start’, also in the gallery. It really is – very fresh, delicious, artfully presented with friendly service – cappuccino and dessert top it all off to a very high mark.
